KCRW DJ MARION HODGES TO PLAY A CURRENT AFFAIR

Marion Hodges can be heard every other Saturday night/Sunday morning from 3AM to 6AM on 89.9 KCRW, and kcrw.com. Marion has been DJ-ing since the summer of 2007. She co-founded the DJ team Squaregirls, and was a co-creator of the still active indiepop/northern soul dance party, Hungry Beat! The loungier sister of Hungry Beat!, Sophisticated Boom Boom, takes place on the first Saturday of every month at Tony’s Saloon, Downtown Los Angeles. She frequently spins at Wurstkuche (both locations), Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown, and various other concert venues around town. At least eighty-five percent of her wardrobe is comprised of vintage items.

The latest collection, ID vs. EGO is inspired by dreams, instincts, nature and the psyche. It includes dark mixed-metal chains, tubular and arrow-shaped graphic components and vintage geometric snakeskin charms. Ankh’s limited edition unisex collections are all handmade in Los Angeles using reclaimed, vintage and found components mixed with new materials.

Rose Apodaca to Host A Current Affair Dec 3+4!

Curator, journalist and author Rose Apodaca will host the December edition of A Current Affair and sign copies of her latest book, Fred Hayman—The Extraordinary Difference: The Story of Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Glamour and the Showman Who Sold It All. She will also hand select 10 vintage party looks from throughout the show which will be on exhibit and available for purchase.

Rose Apodaca is the former West Coast bureau chief of Women’s Wear Daily and contributor to W, a founding editor of The Los Angeles Times “Image” section, and a continuing contributor to Harper’s Bazaar, style.com, Paper and other publications. She curated the fashion category of the 2010 California Design Biennial, and is active in museum outreach with the city’s fashion industry. Her first book, Style A to Zoe: The Art of Fashion, Beauty, & Everything Glamour, conceived and written for celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, was a New York Times bestseller and now appears in several languages. On tap next is a beauty book with neo-burlesque icon Dita Von Teese for Harper Collins. Ms. Apodaca lives in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood with her husband and daughter, where they operate their modern global design lab A+R.

Artist Rafa Esparza To Exhibit at A Current Affair

Artist Rafa Esparza will exhibit his Gallos Giros Putos Gallones at the December edition of A Current Affair. For the piece, Esparza sculpts roosters using old Nike Cortez sneakers. The birds will be contained to a central exhibit and “perched” throughout the show. This marks the second collaboration between a local artist and A Current Affair, following September’s exhibition of Edith Abeyta’s camp site. A Current Affair is interested in showcasing the works of artists who use found fashion items as a medium.

Artist’s Bio: Rafa Esparza is an artist working and living out of Los Angeles. His works, diverse in their medium are phenomenological reflections of the body, time and space as they relate to colonized entities. Rafa, attuned to Xikano culture as a conflation of an investment by diverse interests to reclaim a sense of identity amongst a population, engages himself in that process by re-performing pre-Columbian sculpture, creating site specific installations and referencing cultural icons via drawings and paintings; however, not as a means to identify with a subject but rather to help attain an understanding of time and space and what survives it.

Rafa recently earned his B.A. in Art from the University of California Los Angeles. He has performed, collaborated and exhibited with other artists in spaces such as, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, REDCAT, Statler Waldorf Gallery, Echo Curio, Hold Up Art, UCLA’s New Wight Gallery, and Human Resources.
